The Mountain Valley Conference (MVC) and the NJCAA Region III released its 2017 men’s soccer All-Conference and All-Region teams. Freshman forward Garrett Axtmann (Castleton/Maple Hill) was named the MVC Player of the Year and head coach Travis Cooke was recognized by his peers as the 2017 MVC Coach of the Year.

Axtmann played in 15 games for the Vikings this season and accumulated a team-high 27 points on 11 goals and five assists. Axtmann becomes the first Vikings player to earn the Mountain Valley Conference top honor during the 12-year tenure of Coach Cooke. Axtmann also earned NJCAA Region III All-Region Honorable Mention, as voted on by the coaches throughout Region III.

During the 2017 season, Axtmann was twice named the NJCAA Region III Player of the Week (9/17, 10/3). Axtmann also garnered the nation’s top weekly honors twice as the NJCAA Division III Player of the Week recipient on Sept. 17 and Oct. 3.

Head coach Travis Cooke recently concluded his 12th season at the helm for the Vikings men’s soccer program and led the team to a 4-1 record in the Mountain Valley Conference and 9-8 overall and earned a postseason berth as the No. 7 seed in Region III. Cooke was previously named Coach of the Year following the 2015 season.

Sophomore midfielder Ryan Euell (Rhinebeck/Rhinebeck) joined Axtmann as Mountain Valley Conference First-Team and NJCAA Region III Honorable Mention selections. Euell played in 16 games and led the Vikings with 12 goals and totaled 26 points during the season. Euell finished the year with three multi-goal games, including a five-point (2 G, 1 A) performance in the regular season finale at home against Jefferson Community College on Oct. 22.
