Hudson Valley Community College women’s tennis student-athlete, Sarah Sampson (Albany/Albany) won the NJCAA Region III No.3 Singles Tennis Championship and was named to the First-Team All-Region team on Sunday afternoon after defeating Onondaga’s Micah Mixon in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
“Sarah was able to dominate the points in her final match today with her versatile play, said Vikings head coach Denise Potenza. “She was able to move the ball to any area of the court to set up her shots and she was especially effective at hitting a combination of drop shots and deep lobs over her opponents all match long.”
Sampson qualified as the two-seed for the No.3 Singles bracket in the regional tournament after completing the 2017 regular season with a 6-1 record as the Vikings No.3 singles player. Sampson advanced to today’s final round after she defeated Mohawk Valley’s Taylor Scalzo on Saturday afternoon in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Sampson became the seventh Hudson Valley student-athlete to earn First-Team All-Region honors since 2012 and the first since Kathleen Mai earned the honors as the Vikings No.2 singles player in 2015.
